Redshift is the stretching of light waves, causing them to shift towards the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum. This happens when an object emitting light is moving away from the observer.

Redshift is a consequence of the Doppler Effect, which you might have experienced with sound waves. When a siren approaches you, the sound waves are compressed, making the pitch higher. As the siren moves away, the waves stretch, and the pitch becomes lower.
